Rising damp
Signs for rising damp to look for can include discoloured or peeling wallpaper, damp stained walls, wet plaster and signs of decay to skirting boards, any of these could indicate possible rising damp problems. Rising damp will appear on ground floor walls only from skirting board level up to approximately one metre high, one reason for rising damp is the breakdown of the original damp proof course installed when the house was built.
Two other forms of damp include penetrating damp and condensation. Penetrating dampness can be caused by poor external pointing, blocked gutters or poor external loose rendering or cracking. Condensation shows as black mould and is usually due to lack of ventilation.
